The Chesapeake Audubon Society works in the Maryland region to promote the stewardship of natural ecosystems through conservation, restoration, education, and advocacy. We schedule hikes, canoe trips, and educational events throughout the year to help members and guests learn about birds, plants, and the natural world around them. Beginners are welcome!

CAS Field Trip – Spring Wildflower Walk- Patapsco Valley State Park

Saturday, April 20, 2024, 9:30 AM – 12:00 noon
Join naturalist Bryan MacKay for a 3 mile hike through a narrow stream valley filled with native wildflowers. The Soapstone Trail is rocky in places, has several streams to cross on rocks, and will likely be muddy. Park at the Southwest Area Park-n-Ride at the intersection of I-195 and South Rolling Road in Catonsville. Then walk across Rolling Road to the well-marked trailhead. Free (no fee). The leader appreciates an email with your intent to attend in the event circumstances require a last-minute change. To register please contact Bryan at mackay@umbc.edu, at least a day in advance.
Audubon Maryland – DC – Birdwatching Tour of Druid Hill Park

Meet at 3001 East Drive, Baltimore
Druid Hill Park is Baltimore’s oldest large park and is home to 745 acres of forests, fields, and a large lake. 189 species of birds have been documented here, including nesting Baltimore orioles and yellow-crowned night herons. Audubon experts will lead us in search of avian friends! No experience necessary. Audubon Maryland – DC WEBINAR – Habitat Gardening for Birds and Communities

Join us for Audubon’s popular Habitat Gardening webinars to explore why and how to cultivate your outdoor spaces for birds and butterflies. Weaving the Landscape (Pickering Creek Audubon Center)

Almost any growing thing can be used to weave! Take a walk through Pickering Creek’s diverse ecosystems. As we walk, we will gather vines and other weaving materials. Learn about the ethics of wild plant gathering as we identify and assess our possible materials. Leave with your own wildcrafted weaving, a wreath, a basket, a vining flower crown? It’s that time again! Time for our famous and fabulous spring dinner, featuring your choice of five scrumptious soups, a salad, and rolls. Excellent homemade desserts available for purchase at nominal prices. A glass of wine or bottle of beer is optional for a small extra ticket cost.
This year’s speaker will be well-known Maryland naturalist, Bryan MacKay. If you want to see some beautiful nature photography and know where, when, and how to travel about our state in search of birds and natural beauty, you won’t want to miss this program! Bryan is the author of ” A Year Across Maryland: A Year Across Maryland: A Week-by-week Guide to Discovery Nature in the Chesapeake Region.”

Birdwatch & Walk (Pickering Creek Audubon Center)

Have fun bird watching for science at Pickering Creek. Bird watchers of all skill levels are encouraged to assist volunteer leaders with bird monitoring along the Center’s trails during this monthly bird survey. Help us collect data that allow us to track long-term trends on how birds use the Center. Currently we have spotted and identified over 230 species at Pickering Creek! REGISTER HERE
CAS Field Trip Warbler Migrant Trap – Milford Mill (Villa Nova Park)

Location / Directions: (I-695, then right on Liberty Road, right on Washington Ave., right on Milford Mill Rd, right into parking area immediately after going under I-695) Join Brad at this excellent warbler migrant trap along a creek and woods; an easy mile loop. Often during the first half of May this spot is popping with warblers and other songbirds. CAS Field Trip – Birding – North Point State Park (Edgemere, MD)

North Point is a 1,310 acre park on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. We’ll be searching for spring migrants and resident birds on the Marsh Trail and bay front.
